"…The discussion moved to plots in general. I found myself saying to the assembled heads, ‘All plots tend to move deathward. This is the nature of plots. Political plots, terrorist plots, lovers’ plots, narrative plots, plots that are part of children’s games. We edge nearer death every time we plot. Mickey Thompson’s ill-fated “Sears Allstate Special” Indy car. The car started the 1964 race loaded with 45 gallons of high octane racing gasoline. On the second lap driver Dave MacDonald lost control of the car and crashed on the front stretch. The car caught fire and was then hit broadside in the fuel tank by the car of Eddie Sachs. The result was a massive gasoline explosion. Both MacDonald and Sachs were killed. In 1965 USAC mandated the use of methanol and banned gasoline as an Indy car fuel.

14th of October, 1898: the SS Mohegan sinks

The steamer the SS Mohegan sank off the coast of the Lizard Peninsula, Cornwall on the 14th of October, 1898. 106 of the 197 on board died, including Isadora Duncan’s father, stepmother and sister.

Because all of the officers on board died in the wreck, no definite answers were ever given for why they had veered so far off course.
